Single Strand Knots: A Naturals Arch Nemesis

Since being natural I have been noticing the dreaded single strand knot, I never had this issue when I was relaxed. What is a single strand knot? Hair strands that curl up into themselves. Its so annoying once your hair knots on itself you pretty much have to cut it off. What causes single strand knots? Not enough moisture, not properly detangling your hair and allowing your hair to dry on its own (maximum shrinkage). This is something that comes with the territory of having curly hair. So don't worry or think your doing something wrong to your hair when you see the knots.

Things I do to keep my single strand knots at bay (some of them). I make sure I keep my hair moisturized with a cream, butter or oil. You also wanna make sure you get a good detangling tool. Like a wide tooth comb or a tangle teezer. Keep your hair stretched to prevent the strands from coiling into itself and creating knots.  Twists, braids, twistouts, braidouts, banding, blowout (Be Careful of the Heat!) are good ways of stretching your hair. Sleep with your satin scarf, pillow case or hair bonnet protecting your hair at night is super important for anyone relaxed, transitioning or natural.

At the end of the day single strand knots are inevitable so dont worry your hair will always let you know when it needs something. So if you notice a lot of the knots then you know its proably time for a good trim or deep conditioning.
